How to configure a PC for connection to a network using a common networking protocol ?

Networking protocols such as: TCP/IP, IPX, NETBEUI, Appletalk, etc..

If the network has a DHCP server, you should be able to just plug in the ethernet cable and everything should be automatic (for TCP/IP). Otherwise you need to get IP address, netmask, gateway, and nameservers from the network admin and manually assign them.

NETBEUI is a very old noisy protocol that cannot be routed (generates lots of traffic since it is all done with broadcasting). IPX is also older and not routable on the internet. If either or those protocols are still in new Windows versions, you probably have to add them manually for that network interface (which may only have TCP/IP by default).

I am not familiar with Appletalk, since the last Apple I had was a ][+ before the Mac existed. From Wikipedia: "It was included in the original Macintosh (1984) and is now deprecated by Apple in favor of TCP/IP networking."
